Mindset Moments

You know that project, dream, or change you’ve been meaning to start?

The one that keeps getting postponed until “things calm down,” “life gets less busy,” or “you finally feel ready”?

The trouble is, life rarely delivers the perfect moment tied up in a bow. And while you’re waiting for the stars to align, weeks turn into months, months turn into years and the thing you care about stays parked in the “one day” category.

The “I’ll start when…” trap is sneaky because it feels like being sensible. You’re just “waiting for the right time,” right?

But in truth, this delay is often perfectionism wearing a sensible outfit, or it's fear hiding in plain sight.

Here’s how to step out of the waiting room and into motion.

Practical Tips for Breaking Free:

  • Shrink it down:
Big goals can feel heavy to lift. That’s why you never lift them. The trick? Take the smallest piece you can and do just that.

~ Want to start writing? Open a new document and jot down one idea.

~ Want to change your job? Spend 15 minutes writing down what experiences you want to have from your work.

~ Want to get fit? Commit to a 10-minute walk around the block.

Small doesn’t feel intimidating and small steps have a sneaky way of building momentum and snowballing into bigger ones.

  • Try the 2-minute rule:
Productivity expert David Allen popularised the 2-Minute Rule: if something will take less than two minutes, do it now.

Why? Because getting started is often the hardest part. If you open the document, put on your trainers, or send that quick message, you’ve crossed the psychological barrier from “thinking about it” to “doing it.” And that shift matters.

  • Set a “start before you’re ready” date:
Deadlines are magical. Without them, intentions drift. Pick a date, ideally sooner than feels comfortable and tell someone about it. That tiny discomfort you feel? That’s accountability doing its job.

The truth: No one ever feels completely ready. The only way to feel ready is to start, stumble a little and discover you can handle it.

“You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.” – Zig Ziglar
